Here is what we have been up to...
Literacy: This week students were introduced to the concept of morphology: changing the meaning of words through affixes (prefixes and suffixes). We learned about some common spelling rules with vowel suffixes, such as doubling letters, dropping the "e", and changing the "y" to an "i". We reviewed the suffix -ly and learned how it changes a word for how it happens or in this way (quickly, softly, loudly etc.). Grade 3's also completed a big writing task. They independently wrote a story about finding a hidden door behind NLS. Everyone was very creative!
Math: Grade 3's started two new units. Addition and subtraction, and statistics! This week we have been working on practicing three digit by three digit equations (no regrouping) with three different strategies- base ten, expanded form, and the stacking method. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction at home with your child.
For statistics, we started a project with collecting data through tally graphs.
Science: How water changes through all states of matter by making JELLO, and the water cycle was our focus this week. I hope you child showed you their "water cycle in a bag"? We have one more concept to cover next week, then we will have a science unit test!
Social Studies: We briefly discussed historical sites, people, objects, and places that are significant to Canada or Alberta. Next week, we will conduct some research on some historical sites in Alberta.
Visual Art: We created a Rocky Mountain landscape. Grade 3's learned about what the genre of landscape means, and its characteristics (background, middle-ground, and foreground; space, line and form). They are looking good so far.
Physical Education: This week we have been learning soccer by sharpening our dribbling skills.
Have a great weekend!
