chantal

We are pleased to welcome Knowledge Keeper, Chantal Chagnon, to Northern Lights School for a school-wide residency with all students next week. This opportunity has been funded by the NLS Parent Fundraising Society, so we pass on a huge thank you for their generosity!

Chantal Chagnon is a Cree/Métis Multidisciplinary Artist, Educator, Knowledge Keeper and Activist with roots in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan. Cultural Wisdom and Traditional Ceremony are always present in her Teaching Artistry, as she carries her Ancestral Knowledge forward in a good way. Offering Storytelling, Songs, Drumming, Cultural Teachings, Traditional Indigenous Craftsmanship, Art Creation and collaboration has allowed Chantal to share throughout Canada and the World.

Each class will get a chance to meet with and learn from Chantal individually. Our class time with Chantal is March 11th. Chantal will focus on Storytelling and Medicine Wheel teachings based on her lived experiences and wisdom that she will share with us. Working alongside our teachers, Chantal will also provide insight and guidance on continuing to encourage Land-Based Learning in our building.

To honour our school’s TRC commitment this year, Northern Lights School has made the following commitment to action for the 2025-2026 school year: 62.3: Utilize Indigenous knowledges, languages, and teaching methods in classrooms (focus on applying learning that includes inviting Indigenous community members to share knowledge with students).

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Here is what we have been learning this week:

*Student Involved Conferences are on March 19th and March 20th. Please book a time to discuss your child's progress and to provide the opportunity for your child to show you what they have been learning!

Literacy: Grade three's completed their monthly best writing. Their task was to write a paragraph to persuade Mrs. Brinson to add or change something at NLS. Grade three's are working through the process of being a writer by planning, drafting, editing and revising. Next week we will be working editing and revising our best writing. We will also be learning about figurative language and link this language to  different forms of poetry. Our Word Wizards words for next week are: think, two, play, three, after, our, does, these, school, & saw.

Math: We started a new unit this week- Geometry. Our focus this week was learning about different types of lines (parallel, perpendicular, right angle and intersecting), polygons (regular and irregular), and sorting polygons based on their properties.

Science: Grade three's discussed how changes to the Earth's surface has been documented over periods of time; and how humans and animals have an impact on the Earth's surface. Next week, we will be learning about the layers of soil and what mysteries hide with in it- Fossils.

Social Studies & Visual: Happy Holi! Student's learned about the Hindu celebration of Holi. We connected this learning to art and together we drew and elephant and created colourful and beautiful designs on the elephant. Just as they would do during Holi in India.

Physical Education: We continue to learn and build our skills in hockey!

Health & Wellness: Our focus this week was how the roles we have and how these roles help us grow with the skills they support us with. We also discussed how our families, how families can look different, and how the roles and responsibilities in our family can be different.
