Important: Please make sure your child is arriving to school dressed and prepared to go outside. Although this week was too cold most days. On Friday we went out, and some students were not fully prepared. Thank you! 💜
Here is what we have been up to this week...
Literacy: A special guest came to NLS to talk to students about her book, "Brave Like A Buffalo". Melissa Allan is a local Calgary author and she shared her book with us, along with a song. Grade three's have been practicing a writing style called persuasive writing. They were given a choice to write about convincing someone to either buy a fake iPad or a car with no wheels!
Math: This we we learned about division with remainders, and learned new games for math centres. Ask your child what a remainder is! Next week we will continue our practice with division and multiplication through centres AND we will be ending this unit. We will have a SWYK on Wednesday or Thursday. Student's will continue to work on their multiplication facts until the end of the year as this is a very important skill for them when they begin grade 4.
Science: Our focus this week was how some natural events change our earth's surface over a long period of time. This process with called weathering and erosion.
Social Studies: There were lots of cultural celebrations that we discussed and celebrated this week. We learned about Lunar New Year and Ramadan. We created some art (dragon scales and lanterns) to represent our learning. Our black history month spotlights this week was Canadian trailblazer William O'Ree and Alma Thomas.
Visual Art: Our art this week was inspired by African American artist Alma Thomas. This art focused on concentrated brush strokes by creating thick and thin dashes, and by colour mixing and exploration.
Health & Wellness: We started a new unit. "Our Roles". We discussed what different roles we have and the responsibilities that come with those roles (i.e., child, student, brother/sister etc.)
Physical Education: This week grade threes practiced tag games.
Have a wonderful weekend!
