What's coming up!
This year, Valentine’s Day is on Saturday, February 14 but the last day of classes that week is Wednesday, February 11. Sometime between February 9 to 11 classes at Northern Lights School will recognize and approach Valentine’s Day discussions as opportunities for students learn more about how their actions of kindness, gratitude, friendship and small, thoughtful gestures can positively impact the world around them.
Some classes may choose to facilitate an optional exchange of Valentine’s cards/notes from home and these teachers will send a list of first names home. Please see the teacher’s individual blogs for details about what they may or may not be doing.
If you child would like to bring a message of kindness to other students before February 11, we ask that you respect the following expectations:
For safety reasons, no candy, chocolate or other food items can be handed out. (If your child brings any candy, chocolate or food items, they will be sent back home with them.) Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Please make sure to send back your child's green folder on Monday. I will be sending home your child's spelling test
Here is what we have been learning!
Literacy: We had new word work games for our literacy stations what focused on prefixes: non-, and mis-. we practiced cursive letters m, n, and v, and we wrote paragraphs about either what our favourite season is or what your ideal weekend would be. Grade three's had their first word wizards test. Next week, our words are very, was, people, could, their, were, talk, know, where, and some. Practicing these words for 5-10 minutes a day, can make a difference.
Math: Grade three's learned a new multiplication and division strategy called arrays. We played a game called, "The Battle of Arrays". Students spend the rest of the week practicing multiplication and division through word problems, and a mystery emoji. Keep practicing your facts!
Science: Our focus this week was how Indigenous people use simple machines. We also explored simple machines through maker space.
Social Studies: We wrapped up our unit on Alberta's land and history by discussing how Alberta is diverse. Ask you child what makes Alberta diverse!
Physical Education: This week, student's practiced techniques for shooting in basketball.
Music: The grade three's are learning to sing a song, "Bruce".
Visual Art: We finished our one point perspective painting. Student's noticed how this technique created depth and an illusion. Take a look!
