Literacy: This week we did some writing about what everyone did during our time of the strike! We participated in our literacy stations. Grade 3's also started to review "Parts of Speech" to add details to our writing. Today we discussed what nouns are.

Please practice counting coins with them over the weekend. Next week, we are wrapping up our unit of place value. We will have our "Show What You Know" (test) on Thursday November. 6th.

Visual Art: We completed our pumpkin and leaf zentangles!  Through this art project, we practiced the elements of line and patterns. We also learned about warm and cool colours. Take a peak! They all look wonderful.

Physical Education: The focus in P.E. this week was strategy. Grade 3's played "Trick or Treat".

Library Exchange: I realized that I did not let everyone know when your child's library exchange day was! I apologize about that. Below you will find the day that you child is to bring in their library books to get new ones. Students are allowed to keep their books for two weeks, or renew their books after two weeks.

Sept. 29th- Oct. 2nd

 Hi Schu Crew families,

Thank you for your support during this unpredictable time! Below you can see what learning we have been up to this week along with what you can practice while at home. When we return, we will be jumping right back to where left off.

Literacy: In literacy this week we continued to work on writing. We learned about compound sentences. A compound sentence is two complete sentences joined by a conjunction (i.e., but, and, because, for, so etc.). We completed our first "Best Writing" where students wrote on their own, applying what we have learned about writing and phonics so far. They worked hard and focused for 25 minutes! Amazing job grade 3's! This was our writing prompt. Grade 3's were very engaged and excited.

Continue to write and read at home daily. You can check out the UFLI website for printable texts to support reading. Write about anything! Create stories, write about their day, what would you rather questions etc. Practice spelling the 300 high frequency words. Grade 3's should be able to read and correctly spell all of these words.  You can listen to and read books on EPIC. EPIC is a free app/website between the hours of 9-3pm. Our classroom code is clh7094 😊

.

Math: Grade 3's played Bingo to practice our understanding of 10 less/more and 100 less/ more. Then we practiced skip counting by 3s, 4s, and 25s. Please continue to practice reading, writing, and writing a number in word form at home. We are working on numbers up to 100 000. You can also practice fast facts with addition and subtraction with in 20- this is a valuable skills that supports all numeracy subjects. Introduce money with you child. Talk about each bill and coin and their dollar value. You can even total an amount of money together!

You can visit the website abcya.com to practice math and literacy games.

Science: We made a FLOAT! Your homework is make a float and have your child tell you how this connects to the three states of MATTER!

Social Studies: We learned about Alberta Landmarks and completed a gallery walk observing what we know and what we wonder.

Visual Art: Grade 3's started an art piece with staring a pumpkin or leaf. We practiced an element of art (line and pattern) through zentangles! We are not done, but we will them complete when we return!

Thank you for your support! See you soon!

Here is what the Schu Crew has been learning this week!

Literacy: We learned about writing complete sentences vs. fragment sentences. Complete sentences include a subject and predicate where a fragment is missing either a subject or predicate and doesn't express a complete thought. We also discussed the four different types of sentences (i.e., question, command, exclamation, statement).

Math: Grade three's have been demonstrating growth with reading and writing numbers up to 100 000. Continue to practice this at home, especially with writing number in word form. Our focus this week was comparing and ordering numbers (decreasing and ascending order. We played a few new games, such as SWAMP and True or False!

Science: We connected our learning with natural and processed materials to how Indigenous Communities used these sustainably. Also, ask your child about what the three states of matter are!

Social Studies: Learning about residential schools and Canada's past was our topic this week. We read "My Suitcase: Nii Sookayis", a story about a residential school survivor and how her treasured times she brought with her were taken away and the impact she faced. We created our own suitcases. We also learned more through our NLS buffalo walk and tied our orange ribbons- a reminder for how every child should feel when they are school.

Visual Art: The grade three's worked very hard with drawing a self portrait. We are still working on our realistic colouring, but take a look at some that are completed!

Physical Education: This weeks focus was over hand throwing and how to properly catch a ball. To practice this skill, grade three's played Boom City!

Have a great long weekend! We will see you on Wednesday!
