Library Books: You may have noticed that your child came home this week with a ziplock bag and a library book. Please keep their library books in this bag when traveling to and from school. Students are allowed to keep their books for two weeks, and then exchange or renew them if they need to. There is not a scheduled library time for the grade 3's to exchange their books this year. During one of our literacy station centres, students can exchange their book during that time frame when they feel they want to or need to. When they are done reading their books, they can bring them back to school and switch them when they are at the "read to self" station during our daily rotations. Orange Shirt Day:
September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Tuesday, September 29th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.
Students will be engaging in learning throughout the week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and learning tasks, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.
Here is what we have been learning this week...
Language Arts: This week grade 3's reviewed more vowel teams and learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Students were given picture prompts where they had to list words based on the parts of speech to match the picture. We continued to read our class novel, Third Grade Angels. Next week, grade 3's will be connecting read alouds to orange shirt day, reviewing diphthongs (i.e., oi, oy, ou, ow), and parts of a sentence- which is connected to parts of speech (nouns, verbs adjectives). Starting in October, grade 3's will be doing a spelling challenge where they will be given a list of words to practice, followed by a spelling test on Fridays. More info to come next week!
Math: Representing numbers was the focus this week. Grade 3's practiced representing numbers with expanded form, word form, and picture form. We also continued with how to compare numbers using the symbols <, >, and =. Next week, we will be learning about ordering and rounding numbers. Continue to practice reading numbers at home! They are doing amazing!
Science: Ask your child about an ice cream float and how it is connected to the three states of matter! Feel free to make one at home too.
Social Studies: We learned about the Asian holiday, Mid Autumn Moon Festival, and we made moon cakes! Grade 3's will be putting the final touches on their moon cakes on Monday. Please notes that these are edible traditional moon cakes. 😊
Field Study: Grade 3's took out learning outside with our sit spots. A sit spot is a special place where students will observe the land and connect with nature. This week we sketched what we saw, heard, or felt while in our sit spots.
